Berlin flexes its muscles

Berlin residents are a sporty lot – whether they’re Roller-blading, jogging, climbing or playing golf. They don’t have much choice given the huge variety of recreational offerings in the city and its surroundings. Berlin’s sports association has about 2,000 clubs and they have more than 500,000 members who take part in fitness activities all year round.

Beach61
This beach oasis summer camp offers beach volleyball players everything they could wish for, with 25 open air beach volleyball courts open from May to September.

Beach Mitte
The BeachCenter’s outdoor area is only open in summer. It has 54 courts, floodlights, tiered seating and a beer garden. Many tournaments of all levels are held every year. In addition to beach volleyball, there’s also beach handball and beach soccer.

Indoor BeachCenter

At 18.7 m, Der Kegel is Berlin’s highest outdoor climbing tower; boulder course, 850 sq m of climbing area, various degrees of difficulty.

Mount Mitte
Germany’s first high ropes course invites potential summiteers to a very special climbing experience. The 15-m high, hexagon-shaped former steel construction has three levels and six courses, with over 80 climbing stations.

Ostbloc
Climbing fans can enjoy their sport to the full here over 1,000 sq m. A special color scheme enables beginners and experts to quickly find a suitable challenge. Highlight is the 50-m long Henkeltraverse, which is a challenge even for experienced cliff-hangers.

T-Hall Kletterhalle

Cycling


ADFC Berlin e.V.
In Berlin you can cycle on extensive routes through woods or parks, along rivers and canals. The ADFC (German Cyclists Association) has detailed maps that can be downloaded from the Web site. It organizes cycle tours, has a self-service workshop and offers many additional services.

Call a Bike
Deutsche Bahn cycles for hire are available at many stations in Berlin. After a one-time registration, customers can rent a bike from a hire station via terminal, with a phone call or by using the Call a Bike app and then ride off. Rental costs 8 cents a minute and a maximum of € 15 for 24 hours. The first 30 minutes is free if you choose a flat-rate plan. BahnCard holders, students and VBB subscribers get discounted rates.
